6 Dingoes Have Been Killed
Six native dingoes have been euthanised on K'gari by the Queensland Government. These are protected native animals that deserve our protection, not destruction.
Our Heartfelt Condolences
Blue Ring Marketing extends our deepest condolences to the family of Piper James. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time. It's important to note that there hasn't been a dingo attack in 25 years, and it remains undetermined whether dingoes were responsible for this tragic incident.
What's Happening on K'gari?
The Australian dingo is a protected native species and a vital part of our ecosystem. Yet the Queensland Government's response on K'gari has been to kill these animals for behaviours that are entirely natural and shaped by human activity, not malice.
Dingoes are not intruders. They are not pests. They are wildlife living in their natural environment.
When risks arise, they are overwhelmingly the result of human systems: tourism pressure, food access failures, inconsistent rule enforcement, and policy decisions that place animals in impossible situations. Killing wildlife does not improve safety, nor does it address the root causes of the problem.

Why This Matters
- •Lethal control permanently removes animals without fixing the conditions that led to concern
- •It fragments family groups and disrupts ecological balance
- •It undermines public confidence in wildlife governance
- •There are proven non-lethal alternatives that deserve investment
Why Traditional Owners Must Be Included
K'gari is Butchulla Country. The Butchulla people are the Aboriginal Traditional Owners and Custodians of the island and have maintained cultural, spiritual, and ecological connections to this land for tens of thousands of years.
The dingo — known as wongari in Butchulla language — is not just wildlife. It holds cultural significance and is part of the living landscape that the Butchulla people have cared for long before modern management systems existed.
Today, K'gari is jointly managed under World Heritage arrangements that are intended to include the Queensland Government and the Butchulla people working together. This means decisions affecting the island, its ecosystems, and its native species should be made with Traditional Owner involvement, not without it.
Recent events have raised serious concerns that lethal actions against dingoes have occurred without transparent or meaningful consultation with Butchulla representatives. When Traditional Owners are excluded from decisions on their own Country, it undermines cultural authority, breaks trust, and weakens the integrity of land and wildlife management.
Including Traditional Owners is not symbolic — it is essential. Indigenous knowledge systems are grounded in coexistence, respect for balance, and long-term stewardship. These perspectives are critical when managing native species like the dingo, particularly in complex environments shaped by tourism and human activity.
True protection of K'gari's wildlife cannot occur without listening to, respecting, and working alongside the Butchulla people. Any future decisions about dingoes must pause lethal actions, ensure proper consultation, and uphold the principle that Country, culture, and wildlife are inseparable.

What We're Calling For
We respectfully call on the Queensland Government to:
- ✓Immediately halt further dingo killings
- ✓Move away from lethal control as a management default
- ✓Commission an independent review of dingo management policies
- ✓Invest in humane, preventative, and coexistence-based solutions
- ✓Commit to the long-term protection and preservation of dingoes as a native species
Protecting people and protecting wildlife are not opposing goals. With responsible governance, transparency, and science-led policy, both can and must be achieved.
